Online Master’s in Business Analytics – Guide to Choosing a Program
For those who have an aptitude for both business and data science and want to take advantage of the rapid expansion of the big data industry, a Master’s in Business Analytics is an excellent way of applying your abilities. Now more than ever, businesses across industries are seeking to take advantage of data driven strategy to approach a host of concerns, from operations and distribution models to audience approval and user interface.
Business analysts can start lucrative careers helping businesses translate raw data into actionable insights.
As data capturing technology advances, companies are receiving huge amounts of new information. But this information isn’t valuable for businesses without employees who can process and interpret it. This means there will be a growing need for business analysts, who will need to work in larger teams to address the ever-increasing quantity of data they now have at their disposal.
Indeed, the opportunities for business analysts are tremendous and are predicted to continue flourishing for years to come. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts an estimated 23% job growth for operations research analysts by 2031, a fantastic projection that exceeds expectations for many other jobs.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, operations research analysts earn a median annual salary of $82,360, already significantly higher than the average for occupations across the board. These numbers only get higher in the top-paying industries for operations research analysts: those working for the federal government earn a median annual salary of $120,950, and the median salaries surpass $90,000 in the fields of technical services, manufacturing, and management of companies and enterprises.
This guide will help you learn more about the discipline of business analytics and outline the process of getting a master’s degree in business analytics, which is typically the requirement to be a candidate for these positions. It also includes listings of the top online business analytics degree programs. If you think that business analysis is the big data career path for you, read on.

At no other time in history has our species been able to collect, store, retrieve, and analyze data with the same size and scope that we’re experiencing in the 21st century. Just about everything we do on a daily basis generates data on some level — and this is only going to continue as more of us allow machine learning systems (notably, Artificial Intelligence) into our homes, cars, medical and healthcare systems, and so forth.
Regardless of whether you view this massive culling of data as positive (e.g., using AI for early detection of fatal disease and possibly lowering the cost of medical care) or as intrusive — such as Google tracking your every move — someone, somewhere, and at some point will be analyzing the data; yes, even when the AI industry matures or reaches an apex of analytical automation, humans will still be involved.
So, how is business analytics any different than the myriad of other “analytics” job functions that currently exist?
What Does an Online Master’s in Business Analytics Entail?
Programs do vary. But, your academic program will generally entail the following:
- Data mining
- Business analytics strategies
- Data-driven decision making
- Data modeling
- Descriptive, inferential, and predictive statistics
- Probability and stochastic models
- Data warehousing
- Industry-specific electives
Many Master’s in Business Analytics degrees are coupled with a data science course and additional MBA-type courses.
Some programs can be completed in as little as 12 months either online or on campus, while others have more extensive course requirements that take 24 months to complete.
Business Analytics in a Nutshell
A majority of the job postings for business analysts highlight “performance metrics” as the focal point of their business analyst employees. Such metrics may include:
- Financial and risk analysis
- Business process flows
- Resource allocation and utilization
- Regulatory compliance measures
- Departmental performance and areas for improvement
- Customer attrition and retention
- Evaluation of current or future products and services
You may also be required to data mine, and you’ll definitely be working with SQL along with front facing BI reporting and data visualization tools: Cognos, Splunk, PowerBI, Alteryx, Crystal Reports, Salesforce Analytics, Tableau; the list is almost endless. Advanced Excel knowledge will also be nestled somewhere within the job description (yes, despite the array of fancy BI software, Excel continues to be an omnipresent tool — even with data scientists).
Hardcore tech companies — as opposed to enterprises who are not explicitly producing tech products, but are merely using technology to support and promote their products or services — will likely necessitate experience with Scrum and Agile practices along with knowledge of programming languages (usually Python or Java). Again, these requirements are contingent upon the demands of the employer’s industry. Additionally, you may be paired with a specific department, such as Sales or Marketing, or work with all stakeholders including customers. To some extent, you might be tasked with building predictive and inferential models; but, this frequently stops short of your constructing machine learning, deep learning or AI algorithms — which is one essential difference between a business analyst and a data scientist.
The typical minimum educational qualifications for a business analyst job ranges from an Associate’s degree or a Bachelor’s degree in business, computer science, statistics, finance or math. However, if you have five or more years of experience in a business analyst (or similar) role and you’ve worked with a specific BI or industry dependent software, enterprises may still consider you as a viable candidate for employment. Higher levels of education, particularly a business analytics Master’s degree, tend to push applicants towards the top of the “we should interview” pile — as long as either the education or experience is directly applicable to the job.
Business Analyst vs. Other Analytics Job Titles
To be completely forthright, there are minor differences between a business analyst and the other analytics titles previously mentioned. We’ve already covered the primary separation between a business analyst and a data scientist (machine learning, deep learning, and AI development and deployment — and the academic degree requirements are generally higher as a minimum qualification).
Data analyst positions tend to fall more into the “building queries, data modeling, and managing ETL processes” role. They frequently dig deeper into the backend database system and, consequently, there is more emphasis on programming languages. The caveat here is that smaller enterprises conflate several roles into one so there might not be a clear-cut divide between a business analyst, a data analyst, and a data engineer (who also perform analytics that focuses on database/data warehousing performance and other processes).
Summarily, there can be job function crossover between a BA and other analytics roles. Furthermore, BA experience can eventually lead to data science, given the right mix of practical experience in research and algorithm design and deployment.
Business Analytics vs. Business Intelligence
Another popular professional track for those who possess sharp business skills is business intelligence (commonly referred to as BI). Though business analytics and business intelligence roles tend to work together, there is a key difference in their approach to data.
BI uses descriptive analytics, the form of data analysis that focuses on KPIs (key performance indicators). This means that it is focused on surveying and assessing data that concerns a business’ active operations, evaluating them for key problems as well as areas of success. Business analysis, on the other hand, uses predictive analytics, which aims to make use of data to guide future decisions.
In short, while BI experts use data to help paint a picture of a company in real time, BA experts help a company determine its next steps. They frequently fall one after the other in a company’s data management strategy.
Both business analysts and business intelligence experts are highly valued members of data management teams, with job opportunities expected to increase in both fields. In our current moment, most large companies require a combination of both roles on their teams. Some professionals recommend beginning your career path in business intelligence, as it can be a springboard for the more cutting-edge skill set required in business analysis.
Why Business Analytics?
If you’re interested in more of a front-facing analytics role that doesn’t require building or maintaining ETL pipelines, creating advanced ML/DL/AI algorithms, and spending roughly 80% of your time cleaning data (note: this may still be a core job function of a business analyst), then a career as a business analyst might be the right fit!
Business Analytics Degree Requirements
To start a thriving business analyst career, it is typically expected that you hold a Master’s in Business Analytics. These are sometimes offered as degree concentrations within larger data science degree programs.
A master’s degree demonstrates that you possess the core competencies needed to do the complex work required of a business analyst.
These skills include mastering the programming languages, data modeling techniques, and data visualization tools outlined in the job description above. It is technically possible to learn some of these skills in bootcamps and other short-term programs, but only a master’s program will give you the accreditation you need to instantly assert to prospective employers that you have the skills they are looking for.
While data science bachelor degree options are gradually becoming more widespread, you can apply for a business analytics master’s degree with any bachelor’s degree. Most applicants hold bachelor’s degrees in computer science, statistics, or mathematics. Those with a business orientation may also wish to pursue a business analytics degree, though it’s important to be sure you have mastered foundational programming languages such as Java and Python prior to enrolling, as these will be put into use early into your academic experience.
There are full-time and part-time business analytics degree programs available, many of them offering both in-person and online options. A full-time business analytics master’s program is one to two years long.
FAQs
Why pursue an online option rather than an in-person degree program?
The most compelling reason to receive your Master’s in Business Analytics online is convenience. Virtual programs allow students to work at their own pace, which can be crucial for students who are working other jobs simultaneously. They can also be great opportunities for students to get degrees from top institutions without relocating. If you’re good at doing self-directed work and have a schedule that wouldn’t allow you to take on the added time of an in-person program, online options will be a game-changing opportunity for you.
Is a Master’s in Business Analytics the same as a Data Science MBA?
No. A Master’s in Business Analytics is an MS degree that at its core is still focused around data science, teaching you how to run with data-driven insights to perform the duties of a business analyst. A Data Science MBA, however, is more business-focused than science-focused, teaching only the data science skills needed to build a basic understanding of the field that will help you advise businesses on strategy. (See the section “Business Analytics vs. Business Intelligence” for more information about this distinction.)
Can a Master’s in Business Analytics lead me to a data scientist role?
Yes. Though a Master’s in Business Analytics is specifically geared toward business analyst roles, your education as well as some work experience in the field will give you the core competencies needed to understand the data scientist role, whose duties already often overlap with those of a business analyst.
