Online Master’s in Information Systems – Complete Guide to Choosing a Program
Routing the right information to the right person at the right time is an essential ingredient for a company’s success, regardless of its size.
An online Master’s in Information Systems will guide you through the best practices for merging business requirements, computer systems, and meeting the needs of the end user, e.g., management, c-level executives, employees, and customers who will interact with the information technology on a daily basis.

Master’s in Information Systems or Master’s in Information Technology
If you search for online Master’s in Information Systems degrees, you will likely find results that list both information systems and information technology. Although employer job postings tend to use the two terms as if they have precisely the same meaning, it’s important to note that information systems and information technology (IT) are slightly different.
Information systems (IS) refers to a broader application of technologies used to shuttle data and information between stakeholders. While you will still study IT, or the specific technologies used within an enterprise system, IS incorporates a broader number of components to consider above and beyond just the hardware and software implementations. A complete information system must include the people and processes that will influence the technology’s use (or non-use). Thus, IS encompasses an expansive level of study and application that includes theoretical foundations.
However, as stated above, most employers do not heavily delineate between the two terms. So, as you research the types of jobs available, either before, during or after you complete a Master’s in Information Systems online, do not be discouraged if the job posting lists one but not the other.
Whether you earn a Master’s in Information Systems or a Master’s in Information Technology, as long as you meet the required skills and abilities, and have a stellar interview, you’ll be a prime candidate for consideration. Indeed, IT and IS jobs are on the increase. Per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment opportunities for Information Systems Managers are expected to grow at a faster-than-average rate of 16% through 2031.
As of May 2021, the median salary for an Information Systems Manager is $159,010. However, BLS-reported salaries in IS management range from around $95,220 to $208,000 annually.
What Can I Do With a Master’s Degree in Information Systems?
Completing an online information systems degree is the start of a career path with many different trajectories. Along with the choice between an online information systems vs. and online information technology degree, you have the option of completing a Master’s in Information Systems Management or a Master’s in Management Information Systems online degree.
Furthermore, most programs offer a series of electives that can translate into jobs within:
- Cybersecurity
- health information management
- IT project management
- information systems management
- Database management,
- Business analytics
- Systems analyst
- Data analytics
- Data science
- A litany of other employment possibilities
As such, there are less limitations for job opportunities within the fields of IS and IT when compared to other Master’s level degree programs.
Tailor your electives to the ideal job, something you can envision yourself doing day in, and day out.
- Do you want to help improve the efficiency of healthcare information systems?
- Are you keen on devising and implementing cybersecurity systems for the financial services sector?
- Would you prefer to manage IT projects?
- Or is your goal to become a Chief Technology Officer (CTO) or Chief Information Officer (CIO)?
Online Master’s in Information Systems vs. On Campus
With regard to academic quality, there is very little if any difference between an MS in Information Systems online versus the on-campus version. In fact, online Master’s in Information Systems degrees tend to be less expensive on a per credit or per semester tuition basis. Also, since you won’t need to add the expense of traveling to and from the campus, you’ll still save money by taking an online information systems degree even if there is a negligible difference in tuition.
Online programs are particularly crucial for students who are employed, whether full time or part time, and/or have family obligations that constrain the time available for studying and meeting assignment deadlines. Of course, you’ll have due dates for your work, and it’s likely that most of the questions you need answered will be provided in an asynchronous environment. However, an increasing number of universities are incorporating live video lectures and online Master’s in Information Systems tend to have a smaller number of students (they are termed as “cohorts”). Consequently, it’s likely that you’ll have an experience similar to on-campus education, where the professor or lecturer will answer questions either throughout the live video presentation or after.
Accreditation and the Admissions Process
In the early days of online degree programs, most well-known universities weren’t picking up on the online education trend. Private, for profit institutions were the forerunners of offering professional degree programs online, primarily for nontraditional students (e.g., those with full time employment and other time constraints). Thus, degree mills became rampant, and many of those programs did not have accreditation. This has changed.
Public, non-profit schools, such as state universities have recognized a twofold benefit of launching and maintaining online programs. Ivy League universities are now catching on and offer a variety of degrees within an online format. Consequently, if you choose an online Master’s in Information Systems from a state school such as the University of Colorado, Boulder or a well-regarded private institution, e.g., Carnegie Mellon University, then you can be assured that they’ve attained and sustained accreditation. If you’re not sure whether your school is accredited, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security provides resources for additional research.
The admissions process differs slightly depending on the school. Some require that you take the GRE. Others may waive the GRE in lieu of work experience. International students will need to present verification of their English proficiency either through the IELTS or TOEFL exam. Typically, you’ll be required to provide a Statement of Purpose (SOP) that consists of 500 to 1,000 words. Recommendations from employers and/or prior professors is pretty much a universal part of the application and admissions process.
Transcripts confirming that you’ve completed at least a bachelor’s degree will be a definitive requirement, but the type of undergraduate degree required depends on the program. Since an online Master’s in Information Systems is a technical degree, and you’ll be expected to know how to code, most of the universities will require that you demonstrate a working knowledge of a specific programming language and advanced math. This isn’t set in stone and you’ll need to review the admission requirements of each school that you’re considering for degree completion.
If your bachelor’s degree was in a non-tech field, this may not discount you as an admissible student. There are plenty of MOOCs available via Coursera and edX where you can quickly improve your programming and math skills. Some universities will accept MOOC certifications as demonstration of the basic knowledge and skill set required for program entry. If you take the self-education route to fulfill admission requirements, make sure you highlight this in your SOP. Other than providing you with the best education, universities want to keep their graduation rates as high as possible (this is frequently a factor in judging and ranking universities). So, your SOP and all other documents are assessed to determine if there is a mutually beneficial “best fit” between the student and the program.
Program Length and Tuition Costs
As with admission requirements, the length of a Master’s of Information Systems online varies from school to school. On average, you can expect to finish this degree within two to three years. Now, the tricky part here is that more rigorous programs may demand two to three years of full-time study — or five to seven years through a part time commitment. Ivy League or highly ranked schools tend towards a higher degree of rigor which can mean that you’ll move deeper into studying computer science.
Online Master’s of Information Systems Management degrees may focus more on the business side, e.g., IT project management or information systems design at a strategic and maybe tactical level rather than a hard core operational and back end implementation. Again, doing your research on each school is extremely important. The more technical the degree, the more time (and money) you’ll need to set aside. An upside to earning a more technical Master’s in Information Systems online degree is that you’ll increase the probability of finding employment. We live in a world where technical acumen is held in the highest regard.
As can be seen from the list of online Master’s in Information Systems degrees included below, tuition rates also fluctuate. At the lower end of the tuition scale, you can expect to invest between $13,000 and $15,000. On the higher end, you may be paying roughly $30,000. Tuition rates rarely, if ever, decrease from year to year. Some universities will lock you in at the costs agreed upon when you entered the program. Others will increase their rates, but will also notify you if this occurs.
At first glance, achieving an online Master’s in Information Systems may seem expensive and overly time consuming. However, considering the average salary, the number of job opportunities, and career mobility provided to you by completing the degree, it’s a worthwhile investment and offers a high likelihood of an ample return on that investment over a relatively swift period of time.
