Bachelor Degree in Data Science – Guide to Choosing an Undergraduate Program
Five years ago, a bachelor’s degree in data science was nearly nonexistent. Now, each academic year, colleges and universities are adding new data science programs. In fact, there are now over 50 schools across the country offering a data science major. So, what’s driving this trend?
It’s basic supply and demand. The big data industry has boomed in recent decades, showing no signs of slowing down in the years to come. Even those who don’t work in the tech sector have seen how radically and deeply technological innovations have reached into all aspects of our lives. The same is true for businesses, who rely on technology not only to reach customers and manage operations but also to create strategies driven by data analytics. This means a need for more skilled data scientists to do the instrumental work of putting new technology to good use.
Indeed, the time could not be better to build up expertise in data science. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, data scientists are entering a growing job market where they are generously compensated. Their findings project an estimated job growth rate of 36% by 2031, a tremendous number that greatly exceeds most other occupations in the U.S.
Salaries for data scientists are similarly impressive. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median annual salary of $100,910 per year, with those in the top paying industries – such as computer and semiconductor manufacturing – earning mean annual salaries above $140,000 per year. In short, if your goal is to jumpstart a career where you can aim to make a six-figure salary, data science is an excellent choice of profession.
We can look to these numbers to understand why more bachelor’s in data science programs are proliferating at academic institutions across the country.
Colleges and universities see an opportunity to create quality programs to train students to fill a growing number of high paying jobs.
In the last year alone, over a dozen new data science bachelor degree programs have launched. It’s anticipated that the growth trend will continue.
If you have not attended undergraduate college and are interested in pursuing a career in data science, the following guide will help you learn if a bachelor’s in data science degree is right for you.
What Does a Bachelor’s Degree in Data Science Look Like?
Exactly what does a degree in data science look like? A data science bachelor degree introduces students to the emerging and high-growth fields of digital information and big data. Many of these schools are incorporating data-related degrees as a part of an interdisciplinary program, which involves the collaboration of a variety of different departments. All of the programs require:
- Computer science
- Mathematics
- Statistics courses
Many will also partner with other departments to develop specialties within the data world, such as economics, business, or the healthcare fields.
A hallmark of most of these newly created degrees is hands-on, or real-world experience through developing projects or by collaborating with industry partners. Finding opportunities to contribute to real-world data projects early will help build an in-depth understanding, as well as develop a better sense of the technologies, techniques, and analysis tools required for a career in data science.
Graduates of these programs possess the theoretical, practical, and comprehensive knowledge to help manage and analyze complex data.
What are the Admissions Requirements?
A bachelor degree in data science is different from a master’s degree, Ph.D., certificate program, or boot camp, mainly because they are developed for students without much academic or professional experience.
A good place to start researching undergraduate programs is to look at general university entrance requirements (i.e., high school grade point average, SAT/ACT scores, recommendations, essays, etc.).
In addition to entrance requirements, many of the data science degrees, majors, and minors have prerequisites and grade requirements. For example, data science prerequisites might look like “four computer science classes, as well as three statistics courses with a grade point average of ‘B’ or better in order to pursue a major in data science.” As a general rule, having a solid background in computer science or statistics also helps.
What is the Difference Between a Major and Minor in Data Science?
The most straightforward answer to this question is “number of courses.”
A major typically requires between 10 and 16 data science courses for degree completion, while a minor normally only requires four to six.
Many data science students major in business and computer science while complementing their degree with a minor in data science. As this field continues to grow, there will be more universities offering bachelor degrees, majors, and minors in data science.
How Does the Interdisciplinary Program Work?
Interdisciplinary programs are built around the idea that data science skills can complement many other fields of interest. Whether it is in the sciences, social sciences, or humanities, data is now becoming a critical part of all academic and professional fields.
More and more fields are using big data to better understand trends and predictions. The interdisciplinary programs combine two to three fields of interests, like public health and data, or biology and data, and use the expertise in both fields to create novel projects and new findings.
Which Programs Have Internships and Do They Help With Job Placement?
Career counseling and guidance is a key feature for many undergraduate data science bachelor’s programs. Opportunities to explore different career paths exist early in many data science academic programs. As soon as after completing first year requirements, data science students are reporting that they are finding interesting data science internship opportunities.
Recently, when doing a quick search for “Data Science Internship” on Indeed.com, there were openings at well-known companies such as Uber, Amazon, Facebook, Samsung, Intel, and Apple.
Securing a job after graduation is never a guarantee. Career centers are available to assist; however, students are encouraged to initiate the process. Be cautious of an educational program which promises job placement, as there are often caveats. Speaking with a recent graduate is a great way to network and learn about potential entry level jobs.
How Long Will the Program Last? Is it Available Part-time?
Most bachelor degree programs can be completed in four years or less.
Part-time status does exist at most universities, but that means the overall time to complete the degree will take longer.
For example, at UMASS Dartmouth a student is considered full time when taking 12 or more credits per semester. Students taking nine credits or less are considered part-time and can expect to spend six or more years to earn their degree.
Some students opt to take summer classes allowing them to graduate in close to four years despite taking a lighter course load each semester.
It is important to meet with an advisor to discuss your educational goals as well as a plan to achieve them.
How Much is Tuition?
Tuition is often a key factor when making decisions about which college to attend.
The list of schools below includes tuition cost for each, allowing you the opportunity to perform a side-by-side comparison.
State schools are often the most cost-effective choices for students looking for budget friendly educational opportunities. The lowest cost program we have found is George Mason University where tuition is only $5,862 per year for Virginia residents. On the opposite extreme, there are several universities offering data science programs where tuition exceeds $50,000 per year.
Community Colleges – A Cost Effective Alternative
Pursuing a bachelor degree in data science can be very expensive, with many four-year degree programs costing in excess of $150,000. Attending a community college for the first two years and then transferring those credits to a four-year institution can potentially save tens of thousands of dollars. According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), more than a third of undergraduate students transfer at least once. Of all students that transfer, the NCES study shows that the greatest percentage of these (37%), transfer from two-year to four-year schools.
In following this path, a good first step is to attend a community college and take as many math and statistics courses as possible, while pursuing an associate’s degree in computer science or a closely related field.
Meeting with an advisor at the beginning of the program is imperative, as they need to know of the intended goal to pursue a bachelor degree in data science.
When it is time to consider transferring credits, be sure that the desired school will accept transfer credits from a community college. Most state schools have some affiliation with the community college system. For example, Kansas State University will accept credits from Pratt Community College. Students can obtain an associate’s degree in Information Network Technology and then transfer to Kansas State’s statistics and data science program to graduate with a bachelor’s degree. There are many other similar options where a student can first complete an associate’s degree and then go on to complete a bachelor’s degree in data science.
