Best Master’s in Data Science Programs for 2023
Among the most popular career paths in the world of big data is data science. Though the name can sometimes be used as a catch-all to describe a variety of roles related to storing, processing, and analyzing data, the occupation of data scientist has specific features and responsibilities that are unique to the job and which are valued highly by employers.
So what do data scientists do?
In short, data scientists develop methods for capturing and analyzing datasets.
Their responsibilities can include, but are not limited to:
- Testing new data processing algorithms using tools including Python, Hive, Impala, and more
- Capturing, storing, and interpreting data
- Developing predictive models
With so many companies relying on data-driven analysis to guide business strategy, data scientists are highly in demand, performing some of the most important big data functions a company could need.
Why get an advanced data science degree?
Generally speaking, one is only eligible for data scientist positions if they hold a Master’s in Data Science. This is because the skills of a data scientist are so advanced that one typically needs to pursue formal education to build up the competencies required. While there are existing bootcamps and certification programs that can allow one to master some of the discrete skills of a data scientist, such as programming languages, a master’s degree is the only form of accreditation that a prospective employer can trust when hiring a new data scientist.
This article is a guide for those who would like to pursue a Master’s in Data Science, with information about admissions requirements, program features, subject specializations, and more. It also includes a guide to the best master’s programs available, including a shortlist of the thirteen most affordable data science programs you can find. Why Data Science?
If you are looking to jumpstart a thriving career and have an aptitude for computer science and statistics, the real question is: why not data science? After all, the big data industry has become one of the most lucrative and game-changing industries you can enter, with job opportunities having blossomed at a rapid rate over the past few decades.
Indeed, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that this industry expansion will only intensify, with job growth projections for data scientists reaching an incredible 36% by 2031, hugely exceeding the projections for most other occupations.
There are few opportunities that boast higher median salaries and better job outlook predictions than data science.
Since data scientists are expected to use complex skills to perform important functions, they are compensated highly. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for data scientists is a fantastic $100,910, with top opportunities available in the sectors of scientific research, computer systems design, company management, technical consulting, and the insurance industry.
In light of these numbers, it’s easy to understand why so many young professionals are entering the world of data science. If you’re feeling motivated to take the next steps toward your data science career, read on.
What are the Admissions Requirements?
While each school and program have unique admissions requirements, there are some similarities.
All data science master’s programs require a background in statistics, mathematics, or computer science. You may be asked to submit letters of reference and writing or other samples of work such as programming projects. At first, it’s best to focus on the course offerings while narrowing down your program options.
Once you have a list of schools with the desired coursework, then review the admission requirements. Not all programs require a GRE or GMAT score. For example, George Washington University is one of many programs listed below where the GRE is not required. For help preparing for the GRE check out our test prep guide here.
Which Programs Have Electives?
At their core, all programs will focus on foundational data science. But within the field, there is also a tremendous amount of room to develop a specialty which could lead to different career opportunities. For example, NYU students take 6 electives in their area of interest such as in business, health, or analytics.
When evaluating different programs, take note of the elective options to find a fit aligning with your interests.
Which Programs Have Internships? And, What About Career Placement?
A master’s in data science is a professional degree. So, paying attention to how the program will create a long-term career foundation is critical. It’s not enough to just take classes and work on projects. Graduate programs should also help build professional networks and provide contacts. Common career placement components include the following:
- Portfolio: Class assignments, group work, and capstone projects provide the ability to showcase your work. This will become invaluable when applying for jobs and trying to land interviews. Start publishing projects and work on a personal website or on a website like GitHub.
- Internships: Internships provide real-world experience and can often lead to longer term employment. Like electives, internships are a good opportunity to gain exposure to different niches within the data science field. While applying, check to see if the program has an established internship program or requirement.
- Career guidance: Most graduate school programs will have some type of career placement or guidance service. When evaluating programs be mindful to look for strong career services activities.
- Alumni network: Alumni can also serve as a great resource for developing career opportunities. Look to see if there are active opportunities to connect with alums who are currently working in data science.
How Long Will the Program Last? Is it Available Part-Time?
Most data science master’s degree programs can be completed anywhere between 18 months and 3 years of full-time coursework.
Increasingly, programs are launching part-time options, such as the University of Washington. This provides a great opportunity for working professionals.
How Much is Tuition?
Tuition is often the leading factor in making decisions about graduate school, and it’s an important one.
The below list contains cost-per-credit information for each data science master’s program.
One thing to consider is that a higher cost-per-credit does always mean higher quality or guarantee better outcomes. That’s why evaluating all the components of a data science program are useful. Location, elective availability, and career services are all key factors.
Most accredited data science programs have some sort of financial aid or scholarships available. Visit our STEM Scholarship guide for more financial aid information.
