The Most Affordable Data Science Bachelor’s Programs for 2023
In the not too distant past, data science degrees were almost exclusively available to grad students and PhD hopefuls. STEM scholars would typically have to earn bachelor’s degrees in fields like computer science or statistics before actually studying data science at the Master’s level — a process that would often take six years or more.
But the economy waits for no one. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, American companies will need to fill over 13,000 data scientist roles every year through 2031. Similarly, the Burning Glass Institute’s 2022 workforce analysis found that as an industry, data science is, “experiencing high and growing labor demand with a severe shortage of workers.” To keep up, some of today’s top colleges are now offering four-year or accelerated bachelor’s degrees in data science.
Undergraduate data science programs often teach many of the same principles found in a Masters-level curriculum: machine learning, data analysis, algorithmic design, and programming. Some even offer specialized degree tracks focused on industries like health informatics, finance, and software development.
However, the goal isn’t to make data science graduate programs obsolete. It’s to give students the skills they need to enter a workforce craving their talents or pursue more advanced studies later in their careers. If either of those goals match up with your own, here are 21 affordable bachelor’s data science programs that can help you get there without straining your budget.
What Makes These Bachelor’s Data Science Programs Affordable?
The undergraduate data science programs on this list all fall below the average tuition rate for each state. While this is determined using the average rate for in-state students, we have also included the per-credit-hour rate for each program. This way, you can make an informed decision about your education and career no matter where you decide to pursue your degree.
Many of these programs feature a number of scholarship and financial aid opportunities. Some aid programs are based on financial need while others reward students for academic achievement. But like their graduate-level counterparts, some of these undergrad data science programs also offer unique research grants to enterprising students.
Why Isn’t My State on this List?
Bachelor of science (BS) and bachelor of arts (BA) data science programs are relatively new. Not every state has a college that offers data science degrees at this level or for below the state’s average tuition rate.
However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t peruse this list if your state doesn’t appear. Some schools offer online data science degrees taught by the same faculty using the same curriculum as their on-campus programs. You may also want to explore DiscoverDataScience’s index of data science programs by state.
What Makes These Bachelor’s Data Science Programs Worth It?
“Affordable” doesn’t always mean “worth it,” especially when it comes to education. The affordable data science programs on this list, though, were selected because they go beyond the one-size-fits-all approach to education data science professionals need.
The undergraduate data science programs on our list:
- Are accredited. Degrees from accredited institutions can tell employers and grad school admission boards that your education came from a school with a well-designed and well-rounded curriculum. Accredited programs are reviewed by education professionals and typically have to follow rigorous academic standards.
- Offer experiential learning opportunities. Data science isn’t all about mathematical theory and office work. It’s about using data to make informed yet complicated decisions. Many of these programs feature internships, study abroad programs, and even industry-sponsored research projects that let students analyze real data with today’s most innovative data software.
- Feature interdisciplinary faculty. Even though data science is its own field, it draws on just about every field within STEM. Along with math and computer science faculty, the classes in many of these programs are taught by people with years of experience handling data in domains like health, economics, history, cybersecurity, marketing, and more.
- Cover the basics. Though some programs require some programming or statistical knowledge, many include prerequisite courses catered to students of all kinds. Many schools also pair students with advisors that can help them design a class schedule that helps them meet their professional and academic goals.
- Dive into advanced skills. While four-year bachelor’s programs typically require students to take general education courses, many of these data science programs are streamlined so students get hands-on experience with skills like algorithmic design, data visualization, artificial intelligence, and database management.
Whether you’re looking for a public or private or an online or on-campus program, there’s likely to be something on this list that checks all of your boxes.
